Windows Embedded Hands On Labs - Milan

On Tuesday, December 13th BEPS Engineering, in collaboration with Microsoft Innovation Center (Torino) and Windows Embedded EMEA Team, has presented two Hands-On-Labs on Windows Embedded technologies. The HoLs have been presented in the new Labs of the Microsoft Campus located near Milan.
In the morning Beppe, Marco and Gianni, three eMVPs from BEPS have presented the Hands On Lab on Windows Embedded Compact 7, the last version of Windows Embedded CE. The main objectives have been to allow participants to work directly on workstations configured and ready to use, to practice with the help of trainers and take home the possibility of repeating the exercises on their own workstations.
In the afternoon, with the same formula, we have moved to Windows Embedded Standard 7, the packaged version of Windows 7.
The 18 participants were satisfied and, at the end of the day, there was the time of the questions that prompted the trainer to treat, in more detail, the required arguments.

Microsoft MVP 2011 Award!

I was speechless when I received this mail from Microsoft:
Congratulations! We are pleased to introduce you the 2011 edition of Microsoft ® MVP Award. It's an award for technical community leaders with exceptional skills who actively share with others the extraordinary quality of its expertise in the field. We really appreciate your incredible contribution, relative to Windows Embedded within the technical community over the past year.
The Microsoft Most Valuable Professional (MVP) is the highest award given by Microsoft, to those it considers "the best and brightest from technology communities around the world" who "actively share their ... technical expertise with the community and with Microsoft".

To receive the Microsoft MVP Award, MVP nominees undergo a rigorous review process. A panel that includes members of the MVP team and Microsoft product groups evaluates each nominee's technical expertise and voluntary community contributions for the past 12 months. The panel considers the quality, quantity, and level of impact of the MVP nominee's contributions. Active MVPs receive the same level of scrutiny as other new candidates each year.

MVPs are independent of Microsoft, with separate opinions and perspectives, and are able to represent the views of the community members with whom they engage every day.

I'm very happy and honored to receive this award, I need to congratulate with my colleagues Gianni Rosa Gallina and Beppe Platania, who have been awarded Windows Embedded MVP too!

Thank you to all Microsoft and non-Microsoft people who brought me to this award.

Windows 8 dev preview running on a small PC!

This video shows Windows 8 running on a Intel AtomTM N450/D510 1.6 GHz fanless with 1GB RAM with a display 19'' with resistive touch screen single touch, USB controlled.

I installed the Windows Developer Preview English, 32-bit (x86) version from http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/apps/br229516
I created a USB bootable device using Windows7-USB-DVD-tool, available at http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msstore/html/pbPage.Help_Win7_usbdvd_dwnTool
The installation was really easy and fast: I turned on the machine and I launched the installation directly from the USB drive. After 20 minutes it was ready.
Here some pictures during installation.

I had a problem with power supply so I had also this nice blue screen. Anyway the system that is only a developer preview was able to solve the problem after reboot. :-P

EmbeddedSPARK Challenge 2011 @ Finals Again!

After have won the challenge last year, I was really surprised to see again my project selected to the final! We had good time in Seattle, where we visited the Windows Embedded headquarter, Microsoft Advanta, and we met judges of the competition: the Windows CE architect Mike Hall, the evangelist Olivier Bloch and Sam Phung, embedded MVP.

At the end I achieved the 3° place, while my colleague Gianni was 2°; Sebastian LondoƱo from Colombia won the first prize with his project ArS8VER.
I need to thank Gitte-Lena (steel) for the organization and the support to have fun in the final days.

How to build, deploy and run a Windows Embedded Compact 7 image

Following this interesting article on Embedded101 Build Windows Network Projector with WEC7 in about an Hour I decided to put on practice my first official WEC7 image on a real hardware recording all steps.

First, I built a image, including a silverlight shell provided by Microsoft inside Platform Builder 7.

After that, I prepared a Compact Flash with diskprep and ran the OS on a device with:
- CPU: Onboard Intel D510/525 Atom processor,
- RAM: 1GB

Thak you Sam for the excellent article!
